Project Background

Primary School Teaching/Education

Volunteers are placed at a Primary School, where our Schools vary according to location, resources and level of trained staff, classrooms are overcrowded (40+ learners per class) etc. There are limited facilities and little or no recreational activities (e.g. sport and art). Age of the Learners are 6 years to 13 years old and Opening Times are Mondays to Thursday from 08:00 to 14:30 and Fridays from 08:00 to 12.30 (this may vary depending on the specific school).

Primary School Sports/Physical Education

The Physical Education programme runs in conjunction with our Primary Schools where Volunteers are placed at local public/government Schools. Majority of the Schools does not have equipment to conduct a Sports Programme and volunteers are to be flexible and use their initiative. Volunteers will only have 1-3 periods of Physical Education per day, approximately 1-2 hours only and the rest of the day they will be required to assist the Teachers in the classroom with lessons. This can vary depending on the activities planned for the day, or the volunteer’s creativity and initiative to conduct their own Physical Education lessons with the children.

Requirements: Copy of passport; Police Criminal Clearance Certificate; 2 weeks minimum volunteer period.

Volunteers are placed in groups and will, on a rotation basis, perform 2 activities/duties per day (daily schedules are provided every evening, stating the following day’s activities). These include the following:

  • Removal of alien (non-indigenous) vegetation in and around the reserve

  • Animal tracking and monitoring (Lion, Rhino, Buffalo, etc.)

  • Tree planting and landscaping to minimise the effects of erosion

  • Wilderness trail hikes and patrol

  • Fence and enclosure patrol and servicing

  • Game counts and capture

  • Assist with Vet duties

  • Feeding of predators in rehabilitation

  • Assist with early morning, daytime and evening game drives

  • *All activities are accompanied by a qualified game ranger

Cape Town is one of Africa’s most popular tourist destinations for a reason. Its beaches, such as Camp’s Bay, are world renown, and Cape Town’s beachfront and downtown areas are lively at any time. During the day it is easy to find artisans selling their crafts or outdoor cafes to enjoy the Mediterranean climate. At night, there are many excellent bars, clubs and restaurants where locals and foreigners can relax and socialize.

There are numerous cultural sites to visit, including the Bo-Kaap neighborhood and the Castle of Good Hope. They reflect Cape Town’s long history and help explain why the city is one of the most multicultural in the word. Robben Island, the infamous prison where political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, were held during apartheid is a difficult but necessary stop. For outdoor lovers, Cape Town has a wide mix of opportunities. Table Mountain is a breathtaking spot to visit, and there are many nearby hills, mountains and trails that make for great biking, climbing and hiking. Many, like Lion’s Head Mountain, also offer stunning views over the city and ocean below. Join in on tours down the Garden Route and a Game Drive to spot the Big 5.

The Namaste Volunteer House is located in Cape Town’s most bohemian suburb, Observatory! Affectionately called “Obz” by the locals, this suburb is the home of the oldest South African Astronomical Observatory, hence the name.

It’s an arty district that is home to a huge melting pot of various people, sights, sounds, tastes and cultures! The area is also located very close to the University of Cape Town and therefore is also home to many local and international students. The main entertainment area is centered around Lower Main Road – during the day, you’ll easily find yourself in one of the amazing little boutique shops, restaurants, coffee shops or cafes, meeting and chatting with the locals. As the sun goes down, Obz really comes alive! The music and lights of the various bars, clubs, pubs, pool halls, restaurants, etc. provide an awesome nightlife!

The Volunteer House provides a clean, comfortable, safe and secure living-environment for all our volunteers – the house is strictly used for our program participants and not open to members of the public.
