Project Background

The state of Odisha is an untapped gem, unexplored by many foreigners and Indians alike. It is the 3rd largest state with a tribal population, with 57% of them living below the poverty line. Although Odisha is famous for the holy city of Puri, the medieval city Cuttack, and the current “smart city” capital Bhubaneswar, many other parts are still left unknown. Odisha is rich with thick forests, mountains, rivers and wildlife. Its geographic location means it experiences every season. In order to avoid the humid summers, and heavy monsoons that come right after, we do not run the program between June and October. The monsoons especially can submerge entire bridges making travel extremely hazardous.

You will notice quite a few contrasts in Odisha. While there is internet, factories, large mansions and highways…there are also an overwhelming amount of tribal people left behind when it comes to encouraging education, health awareness and job opportunities. Many are comfortable with their way of life, and consider outsiders as an interference. However, locals, like the doctor we work with, make continuous efforts to provide what they can to their community, and need all the help they can get.

Tribal teaching project in Odisha is situated in Khairdihi village in Jharsaguda district. You will be working in a small private community school in the village. The project location is a remote area and have limited access to internet and other facilities. The project needs volunteers who can speak and teach English very well. The schools are under funded and hard to get good teachers when it comes to quality. The volunteers will play a vital role in providing English education and some other subjects like Mathematics, Science, Geography, Foreign language, Physical training, Computers etc.

As a volunteer, your possible duties are as follows:

  • Teaching general subjects like English, Science, Maths & Geography.
  • Teaching computers and internet.
  • Teaching a foreign language. (Spanish, German, French, Japanese, Chinese etc.).
  • Sports and outdoor activities.
  • Arts and crafts.
  • Music and dance.
  • Other duties assigned by the school management.

You will be working on the projects from Monday to Friday and weekends are free. On weekends you can visit the numerous religious places in Sambalpur that is not far from your project location. There are many beautiful places to see in and around Sambalpur city such as Budharaja Temple, Hirakud Dam (Longest Earthed Dam in the World), Ghanteshwari Temple, Famous Huma Leaning Temple, Pradhan Path Waterfall, and APJ Abdul Kalam planetarium.

Sambalpur is well-known for its forest reserve. There are many conserved forests. Ushakoti National Park, Debrigadh National Park are a few. Samleswari Temple. Erected by Chauhans in the mid-16th century. Sambalpur is famous for its handlooms and textile industry, popularly known as Sambalpuri Sarees. Price can range from a few hundred to a hundred thousand rupees. There are many shops in the city, but the most famous shops can be spotted in Golebazar, the main shopping center. It also has a city center and it has lots of things to enjoy. There’s always something new to discover in Incredible India!

Please understand that while your hosts will do their best to make your stay comfortable, there are frequent power outages, a lack of AC and heaters and toilet paper.

Wi-fi is difficult to obtain in these remote areas. The best method is to purchase an Airtel Sim Card at your airport of entry into India. You can easily prepay for data. Airtel works well at the some areas, however is weak in Khairdihi.
