Project Background

School Placements: Empower the youth of Sri Lanka, by strengthening their school education. The students’ ages range from primary school to high school. Many of the students are working on their English language abilities, in which you will provide lessons and tutoring. If you enjoy teaching math, you can specify this in your application, some schools are looking for math tutors. All these schools are middle level schools and lacking with tutors for subject teaching, extra curricular activities, physical education, arts and crafts, music and dance and a lot more interactive education.

Community Center Placements: This is about 400 yards from the volunteer’s accommodation and is used by the community and the project for all sorts of activities: The Nursery School, children’s and adults’ spoken and written English language classes, art classes for adults and children, sports activities. The ‘playing field’ next to the center is used for volunteers to run activities such as cricket, soft tennis, football, tunnel ball, catching and badminton. Equipment for all this is available from the volunteer’s resource store. If you wish to augment the equipment with other items for different sports, this is always welcomed. Some of the older boys have heard of baseball and would welcome the opportunity to learn to play this. It should be fun teaching them how to pitch American style. At present the project doesn’t have baseball or basketball equipment. Neither are there any netball posts or nets.

Girls School Placement: It is a very large Government school which has a small amount of church funding as the school’s Principal is a nun. Pupil intake is restricted in as much as the school tries to take pupils whose parents are committed to providing the supportive environment children need to make the most of their education. We are very keen to continue supporting this school because the staff is very motivated. They take on board all worthwhile input from foreign/volunteer teachers, incorporating it into their methodology and curriculum. Thus volunteer input is retained for the future – far more so than in any other schools.

Special School Placement: There are 12 girls at the special school who have learning disabilities or other special needs. Four girls are deaf and mute, but very intellectually capable. It’s so good for these girls if you will work with them, teaching them using spoken English and Sinhalese and American sign language. Deaf children can be very marginalized so by working with them (and playing – please give them some fun!) you will do wonders for their self esteem and morale. They are lovely girls who inspire everyone who works with them. Volunteers can also teach other subjects within the mainstream – English, Mathematics, Science, Drama & Dance etc.

As a volunteer, your duties are as follows:

In Children’s School/Girls school/Community center

  • Provide daily English tutoring/speaking sessions.

  • School beautification projects, such as painting educational murals.

  • Provide tutoring in other subjects, such as math.

  • Teach games, sports and activities for students to engage in.

  • Teach weekly classes with another volunteer or teacher.

In Special School:

  • Teaching English, Mathematics and other subjects.

  • Creating interactive ways of teaching and learning for the girls with multiple disabilities.

  • Fun-loving activities to engage them and to show their talents.

  • Arts and crafts.

  • Other tasks given by the management.

You will be working on the projects from Monday to Friday and weekends are free.Your project location is in the beautiful city of beaches; Galle, on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. It’s well known for the Galle Fort, a fortified old city founded by Portuguese colonists in the 16th century. Stone sea walls, expanded by the Dutch, encircle car-free streets with architecture reflecting Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. Other notable buildings include the 18th-century Dutch Reformed Church and Galle Lighthouse, which stands on the Fort’s southeast tip.

The Old Gate, the fortification’s original entrance, bears the insignia of the Dutch East India Company. The gate leads to the National Maritime Museum, with exhibits focus on seafaring and marine life, including a whale skeleton and items salvaged from shipwrecks. Galle National Museum, built in 1656, displays southern Sri Lankan artifacts such as ritual masks and woodcarvings, and objects from the colonial era. Just outside the northern fortifications, the Galle International Stadium hosts cricket matches with Indian Ocean views.

Tte Kalutara temple is a place you must not miss because of it’s unique architecture. If you are superstitious, you can make a donation and say a prayer at the Seenigama temple for good luck. Be wary of unauthorized local or foreign guides who offer to walk you around these sights for free. Admission is usually free, but you can check with local authorities if you are unsure.

The view from Peace Pagoda  on a clear day is lovely. You could even be lucky enough to witness a sailboat rally (30 boats in 2007) that stops in Galle. There’s so much to do in Sri Lanka, from famous churches to rain forest reserves, you’ll never have a dull moment.
