Project Background

The residents’ stories in this special needs care center are varied. Some are abandoned by their family because of their disabilities and others were put aside due to a lack of money in their family. With limited staff and resources, residents have to take care of each other in their daily tasks. For the youngest children there is school in the morning, the other residents don’t really have a day structure except the moments they eat together and the tea times twice a day.

As a volunteer you can help the residents by contributing to their daily life and let them have something to get through the day, like helping them with creative activities, and playing games. There are also possibilities for physiotherapists to practice with the disabled people. The residents in this center take care of themselves and each other, as a volunteer you should not try to change this you can only try to teach them a way they can do it better. It is important to let the responsibility with the residents, because when you, as a volunteer, leave they have to do it on their own again.

As a volunteer, your duties are as follows:

  • Spending a good time with them.

  • Story telling and enactments.

  • Teaching with the help of the teachers.

  • Assisting in their daily routine life.

  • Cleaning the center and maintaining the hygiene and sanitation.

  • Helping in cleaning their rooms and kitchen.

  • Helping in eating and walking.

  • Other duties assigned by the project management.

You will be working on the projects from Monday to Friday and weekends are free.Your project location is in the beautiful city of beaches; Galle, on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. It’s well known for the Galle Fort, a fortified old city founded by Portuguese colonists in the 16th century. Stone sea walls, expanded by the Dutch, encircle car-free streets with architecture reflecting Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. Other notable buildings include the 18th-century Dutch Reformed Church and Galle Lighthouse, which stands on the Fort’s southeast tip.

The Old Gate, the fortification’s original entrance, bears the insignia of the Dutch East India Company. The gate leads to the National Maritime Museum, with exhibits focus on seafaring and marine life, including a whale skeleton and items salvaged from shipwrecks. Galle National Museum, built in 1656, displays southern Sri Lankan artifacts such as ritual masks and woodcarvings, and objects from the colonial era. Just outside the northern fortifications, the Galle International Stadium hosts cricket matches with Indian Ocean views.

Tte Kalutara temple is a place you must not miss because of it’s unique architecture. If you are superstitious, you can make a donation and say a prayer at the Seenigama temple for good luck. Be wary of unauthorized local or foreign guides who offer to walk you around these sights for free. Admission is usually free, but you can check with local authorities if you are unsure.

The view from Peace Pagoda  on a clear day is lovely. You could even be lucky enough to witness a sailboat rally (30 boats in 2007) that stops in Galle. There’s so much to do in Sri Lanka, from famous churches to rain forest reserves, you’ll never have a dull moment.
