Project Background

In Odisha, Namaste Volunteer has partnered with Dr. Hrudananda Naik, a respected doctor who has more than 38 years of experience. We are so excited that he has allowed us to present this opportunity to provide such a unique program. He has dedicated his whole life to working with tribal populations in the small town of Bhojpur. He’s also an honorary board member of the Forest Department, an avid Badminton player and supporter of local sports tournaments for children. You will be working directly under him, and accompanying him wherever he goes.

Although we won’t have regular Aii Group staff with you at this particular location, Dr. Naik is happy to help you, and is in communication with us daily. Your tasks will include providing medical knowledge and practices to help heal and educate patients. You will be working in Dr. Naik’s clinic, Susama Clinic, and also experiencing life in the jungle village of Khairdihi (Dr. Naik’s home). This means your time will be split between staying at the clinic (accommodations are on the second floor) and the village. Dr. Naik may also take you to local hospitals and other clinics too, so that you can widen your understanding of rural medicine practices in India. You may even make a few house calls!

Your patients will be mostly locals/tribal villagers who can be hesitant to seek medical help, distrust doctors, may avoid or reject any medical services provided or even walk in drunk with a sick child. Many may not even take you seriously, or think you are just a strange looking tourist. You may feel helpless or frustrated during your time at the project. Just remember your interactions, kindness and desire to help will leave a lasting impression on many. Facing these challenges will also help you develop better patience, problem solving skills and a greater cultural understanding.

The Tribal Odisha Medical Program is extremely unique, and provided only to volunteers and interns with a proven nursing, medical, health education background. Due to the difficulty in adjusting to the remote location and lack of certain facilities/services we have a few requirements;

  • There is a max. number of 2 spots available at a time (there is one doctor at the clinic).
  • The project is open from October 1st to June 1st.
  • We recommend you stay for the entire four weeks of the project; however, a minimum of 2 weeks is required.
  • We have an age requirement of 18 years and up.
  • Women and men are both welcomed to join, but will room separately.
  • No children/pets allowed on this project.
  • You must take the necessary vaccinations and medications required by your country (on your own insurance) before your arrival to India.
  • Being comfortable around wildlife, this includes snakes and elephants, and insects such as mosquitos and spiders.
  • You must have the ability to be flexible, open minded and ready to face new challenges.

As a volunteer, your possible duties are as follows:

  • Interaction with the patients & local staff at the project site

  • Helping in preparing medication and treatments
  • Helping in cleaning and maintaining the clinic
  • Taking care of injured/sick patients, engaging with them
  • Picking and dropping back patients to a specified location identified on the basis of phone calls to the clinic
  • Providing information to patients and students about healthy habits
  • Help in medical care, operations, dressing and first aid (only experienced interns or with a medical background)
  • Providing health education
  • Other tasks allocated by the doctor

You will be working on the projects from Monday to Friday and weekends are free. On weekends you can visit the numerous religious places in Sambalpur that is not far from your project location. There are many beautiful places to see in and around Sambalpur city such as Budharaja Temple, Hirakud Dam (Longest Earthed Dam in the World), Ghanteshwari Temple, Famous Huma Leaning Temple, Pradhan Path Waterfall, and APJ Abdul Kalam planetarium.

Sambalpur is well-known for its forest reserve. There are many conserved forests. Ushakoti National Park, Debrigadh National Park are a few. Samleswari Temple. Erected by Chauhans in the mid-16th century. Sambalpur is famous for its handlooms and textile industry, popularly known as Sambalpuri Sarees. Price can range from a few hundred to a hundred thousand rupees. There are many shops in the city, but the most famous shops can be spotted in Golebazar, the main shopping center.It also has a city center and it has lots of things to enjoy. The doctor alternates between staying at the clinic and his home in the even smaller village of Khairdihi. You will be doing both as well. Both accommodations are inclusive in your fee. By staying at the clinic, you are available for any medical emergency or situation, and your stay at the village will have you experiencing a simple life in the jungles of Odisha.

While at the clinic, you will be surrounded by the local shops, but in Khairdihi your menu will be based on what’s seasonally available. Please understand that while your hosts will do their best to make your stay comfortable, there are frequent power outages, a lack of AC and heaters and toilet paper.

Wi-fi is difficult to obtain in these remote areas. The best method is to purchase an Airtel Sim Card at your airport of entry into India. You can easily prepay for data. Airtel works well at the clinic, however is weak in Khairdihi.

Important notes about project;
