In Galle we are working in 02 elderly homes. The first has 12 elderly residents. There is a need for solo or group of volunteers to help them by cleaning their home and washing their sheets. In the volunteer’s store, equipment is available for use for this task. The elders would also benefit from volunteers being prepared to play darts, carom and cards with them. These have been provided at their home via a volunteer’s donation. Cleaning and washing may seem menial tasks, but showing these old men that someone cares enough to do this for them is a great gift to give them.
The another home has up to 75 residents – both male and female. This home is provided and run by Catholic nuns. One sister is the Sister in Charge and another is deputy in Charge. Both sisters are nurses. The home takes elderly people of all faiths. The need of the volunteers is there to spend a quality time with them as they have nobody to share their emotions and stories. Generally you can show them that they are needed in this world and your kindness and attention will improve the quality of their lives.
As a volunteer, your duties are as follows:
Providing social interaction daily such as playing games, doing arts & crafts, and conversation.
Assist in daily grooming tasks, such as nail clipping, hair cutting, hand massage, assistant with shaving etc.
Cleaning rooms and the home, such as washing sheets, mopping floors, etc. Please understand, such menial tasks shows that someone cares , which is a wonderful gift to give them.
Small beautification projects around the home.
Providing physiotherapy, and other forms of therapy.
Other tasks allocated by the project management.
You will be working on the projects from Monday to Friday and weekends are free.Your project location is in the beautiful city of beaches; Galle, on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. It’s well known for the Galle Fort, a fortified old city founded by Portuguese colonists in the 16th century. Stone sea walls, expanded by the Dutch, encircle car-free streets with architecture reflecting Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. Other notable buildings include the 18th-century Dutch Reformed Church and Galle Lighthouse, which stands on the Fort’s southeast tip.
The Old Gate, the fortification’s original entrance, bears the insignia of the Dutch East India Company. The gate leads to the National Maritime Museum, with exhibits focus on seafaring and marine life, including a whale skeleton and items salvaged from shipwrecks. Galle National Museum, built in 1656, displays southern Sri Lankan artifacts such as ritual masks and woodcarvings, and objects from the colonial era. Just outside the northern fortifications, the Galle International Stadium hosts cricket matches with Indian Ocean views.
Tte Kalutara temple is a place you must not miss because of it’s unique architecture. If you are superstitious, you can make a donation and say a prayer at the Seenigama temple for good luck. Be wary of unauthorized local or foreign guides who offer to walk you around these sights for free. Admission is usually free, but you can check with local authorities if you are unsure.
The view from Peace Pagoda on a clear day is lovely. You could even be lucky enough to witness a sailboat rally (30 boats in 2007) that stops in Galle. There’s so much to do in Sri Lanka, from famous churches to rain forest reserves, you’ll never have a dull moment.
