We are working in 04 orphanages in Kathmandu they are situated in Balaji, Jorpati and Kathmandu city. This orphanage originally started for children from poor families whose parents worked in the carpet-making industry, this school now supports poor and/or orphaned children throughout Nepal. All children are sponsored so that they do not have to pay any fees – not even for books or school uniforms! Currently there are 50 students bordering at the school, once again without paying fees. The school has 175 children from nursery through class 7. There are 10 teachers, a music teacher, and a dance teacher. Located just outside of Kathmandu proper, the school is looking for English teachers or subject teachers, as well as teacher trainers.
The Second one is situated in Jorpati within Kathmandu. There were previously 82 children in this home which has now been reduced to 55 all aged between 1 and 14. The majority of these children have been orphaned although there are some which have been placed there as their parents cannot afford to feed them. Currently 8 staff run the orphanage, which has 8 bedrooms and a kitchen. The orphanage runs by donations they receive from various charities and private donations, for the food, clothing, rent and all outgoing costs; however this is a constant day to day struggle. All the children who are old enough attend the nearby Eyelens English School, are sponsored by NV, who provide their school admission fees, tuition fees, books and stationary. So far we have placed 5 volunteers in this orphanage, who help out with the daily routine including basic hygiene. There are currently 30 children who receive this funding so that they can get a good education and further their chances in life. We hope that in the future we will continue to work with and improve the conditions and the everyday lives of these The volunteering children.
As a volunteer, your duties are as follows:
You will be working on the projects from Monday to Friday and weekends are free. Nepal offers a lot to travelers to visit. Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, is a vibrant, noisy city. Packed full of history, palaces and temples, it is also within touching distance of Nepal’s premier attraction: the Himalaya. Kathmandu is home to places to visit like Durbar Square (with temples dating back to the 12th century), Boudhanath Stupa (a world heritage site), and Pashupatinath Temple (the country’s most important Hindu temple, on the banks of the Bagmati river).
Another must-see attraction is the Royal Palace, the site of the infamous 2001 massacre of the Royal Family by the then Crown Prince, and now converted into the Narayanhiti Palace Museum. Kathmandu is also the travel gateway to the rest of Nepal—in particular the tranquil Bhaktapur, the temple-tastic Patan, the Chitwan National Park, and, of course, the Himalaya.
The mountains hold a magnetic attraction for many who visit Nepal, with half of the world’s 8,000 metre mountains found here. The trek to Everest base camp, a two-week trip starting with a nerve-racking flight to Lukla airport, is the most popular mountain activity, whilst the stunningly beautiful Annapurna base camp can be achieved by a 7-10 day trek from Pokhara.
