Project Background

Orphanage Placement: There is a group of nursery children, aged 2 ½ plus, with you will help with the usual learning activities associated with this age group. You may also work with the younger group who are aged between 1 and 2 1/2 years, termed the ‘Baby Group’. The emphasis with these children is play and experiential activities rather than the more academic pre-school learning tasks.

The Project has had an outside area cleaned up for the Baby Class and there is an undercover area for when it rains. We plan to improve the play surface and paint murals and floor games to make the space safer and more attractive. Photos of the children are unavailable as it is orphanage policy not to allow children to be photographed. There are also strict procedures via child welfare for ensuring that volunteers are sound. These are similar to those that would be implemented in developed countries. Orphans are a particularly vulnerable group. Please note that we do not take people to view the orphanage just ‘out of interest’. Only volunteers who wish to work here may visit the orphanage after Child Welfare clearance procedures have been followed.

Street Children’s Care Center: This nursery takes children who live and sleep on the streets and also from the very poor area in which it was situated – a former shanty town. Many of these children have parents who are in prison and/or work as prostitutes. Volunteers generally work here in pairs assisting the teacher, although some volunteers have worked alone. Watch your personal possessions whilst working here. These children are delightful and innocent in the true sense that they do not know any better and are a product of their sad histories and living conditions on the street. You will discover that the children are lovely and very rewarding to work with. They are helpless victims of their dire circumstances.

Kids Nursery Creche: A small, well organised nursery school in Dangedara, a short bus or tuk tuk ride from Yasodora where the volunteers are accommodated in the host family. This is particularly suitable to volunteers who would enjoy the experience of working with young children in an atmosphere that is well organised and where they will have the security of receiving sound direction.

As a volunteer, your duties are as follows:

  • Engage in stimulating activities for young children and babies in Orphanage and Kids Nursery Creche.

  • Teaching the street children in their care center.

  • Assist with beautification projects around the orphanage, such as painting murals.

  • Maintenance and improve children’s’ outside play area.

  • Play games and physical training to the kids.(Outdoor as well as indoor games).

  • Arts and Crafts

  • Music and Dance activities.

  • Health and hygiene activities.

  • Other duties assigned by the project management.

Please note: There are strict procedures that need to followed,  for the welfare of the children. Orphans are a particularly vulnerable group. We do not take people to view the orphanage just ‘out of interest’. Only volunteers who wish to work here may visit the orphanage after Child Welfare clearance procedures have been followed. Informational packets you need to know prior to arrival will be made available to you if you are considering this project.

You will be working on the projects from Monday to Friday and weekends are free.Your project location is in the beautiful city of beaches; Galle, on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. It’s well known for the Galle Fort, a fortified old city founded by Portuguese colonists in the 16th century. Stone sea walls, expanded by the Dutch, encircle car-free streets with architecture reflecting Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. Other notable buildings include the 18th-century Dutch Reformed Church and Galle Lighthouse, which stands on the Fort’s southeast tip.

The Old Gate, the fortification’s original entrance, bears the insignia of the Dutch East India Company. The gate leads to the National Maritime Museum, with exhibits focus on seafaring and marine life, including a whale skeleton and items salvaged from shipwrecks. Galle National Museum, built in 1656, displays southern Sri Lankan artifacts such as ritual masks and woodcarvings, and objects from the colonial era. Just outside the northern fortifications, the Galle International Stadium hosts cricket matches with Indian Ocean views.

Tte Kalutara temple is a place you must not miss because of it’s unique architecture. If you are superstitious, you can make a donation and say a prayer at the Seenigama temple for good luck. Be wary of unauthorized local or foreign guides who offer to walk you around these sights for free. Admission is usually free, but you can check with local authorities if you are unsure.

The view from Peace Pagoda  on a clear day is lovely. You could even be lucky enough to witness a sailboat rally (30 boats in 2007) that stops in Galle. There’s so much to do in Sri Lanka, from famous churches to rain forest reserves, you’ll never have a dull moment.
